Milwaukee Summerfest Music Festival

SummerFest: Something for Everyone
The fresh, country-like smell of corn on the cob and the sweet, warm smell of roasted nuts crawled up my nose as I marched through the gates into the largest music festival in the world: SummerFest. The scorching sun was in my face, and I could hear the different genres of music floating through the air. Even though this festival goes on for eleven days, spending just one day (July 2nd) at the event was enough for me to get the overall feel of it. SummerFest is a place to be entertained by new and familiar music, a place to find unique keepsakes and interesting items, and so much more; but most of all, SummerFest in Milwaukee is a place to enjoy beautiful weather and have fun with friends.
Some of the more popular artists that have, and will be attending SummerFest include Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Jason Mraz, Katy Perry, Brittany Spears, Nikki Minaj, Taking Back Sunday, Kid Rock, Sheryl Crowe, and Maroon 5. When I saw Maroon 5, the size of the crowd was overwhelming, the rush excited every part of me, and the music sounded great.  Aside from these well-known acts, there are over a hundred smaller bands that play on all different stages during the day as well as shows- like a BMX stunt show, which featured professional riders. With so much to do, SummerFest is an event almost anyone can enjoy.

Our Day at Summerfest
By: Ben and Carlos
July 5th 2011

This past Saturday, July 2nd, we had the opportunity to go to the world’s largest music festival, Summerfest located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The festival usually attracts 900,000 people a year, lasts 11 days, and features over 700 bands. Among the most famous bands we saw last Saturday were Maroon 5, Jason Mraz, and Stephen Marley.

When we arrived at summerfest, we walked into a different world where everyone was wearing summerfest shirts with their faces painted. Some guys weren’t wearing shirts, and a lot of people were drinking beer, mostly Miller Lite beer. Practically everyone in there had a can of those. Summerfest is a very important tradition. Most of the people looked like they love the activity. We saw many people dancing, screaming, and jumping. It looked like they wouldn’t live without the activity. It’s almost like Super Bowl fans; feeding off of the energy of the atmosphere. Summerfest is a very important thing for the people in Milwaukee and around the world. This is a very fun activity and we think it’s a very cool tradition tracing back to the late 1960’s. Every country, city, or town deserves to have a big tradition for everyone and Summerfest is Milwaukee’s.

We arrived at Summerfest at 1:30 greeted by thousands of people rocking out to bands, known and unknown. After walking around and eating we decided to go see a band we had never heard of, Pan Am. After 45 minutes of waiting they came on and wowed us with their sound. They played original songs and also did covers of their hero, David Bowie. Their first album comes out at the end of the summer and we can’t wait to buy it. As the day progressed on we were amazed with the bands and other talents such as juggling and magic. At 8:30 we met up with the rest of our friends to prepare for the 10:00 headline, Maroon 5. We made our way through a sea of drunk people, and navigated through the hot and sweaty crowd. We made it as close as possible and stood waiting for an hour and a half. It was incredible; we were in a mosh pit, getting into fights and almost got lit on fire. The lights dimmed and Maroon 5 came out playing their newest hit, Misery. The crowd was screaming. They played their greatest hits and rocked the crowd. Adam Levine is a great front man. After, we returned to the busses  and drove back to our Madison home.
Summerfest is a yearly festival of music and fun. The people it attracts never forget their experience there, watching famous bands and having the time of their life.  We hope we get to go back again
